QUESTIONS AND INFORMATION

QUESTION: What is Naeriel's relation to her names?

ANSWER: Iúleth is her father-name and as such Naeriel cherished it more. For her it was a symbol of the difficult start they both had and the close bond they developed throughout the centuries. During the First Age, Iúleth was the name she favored and the one she used when she introduced herself. Her extended family, cousins and other relatives, had easily slipped into calling her Iúleth instead of Naeriel as they had done for the first ten years of her life.

However, after the War of Wrath ended and Camaenor died, Naeriel refused to use that name anymore. Every time she heard it, the name was a painful reminder of what she had lost and made the wounds of her soul bleed anew. Therefore, she chose to return to her mother-name, Naeriel, a name she found fitting as it meant Daughter of Sorrow.

After the passing of many centuries, when the wounds of the past healed somewhat and the mere mention of the name no longer sent jabs of pain in her heart, Naeriel sometimes revealed her father-name to her closest friends and let them decide in which way they wanted to address her.
